Slab City has a special place in my heart, a traveller’s Mecca set within California’s Sonoran Desert- with the majority of it’s residents being nomadic by nature, it makes for a place that swells during the cooler winter months and boils down to only the truly committed during the searing desert summer heat. The outsiders view of it maybe as a haven for burnouts and methheads but if you dig beneath the surface you find people that have found the freedom that most of us could only dream of. The post-apocalyptic visual of the place might be hard to get past for some, but once you do, you find a community that is more freethinking, friendly and together than most others I’ve been to.
